Oncu eleventh in WorldSSP race 1 at Portimao

Day two of the seventh WorldSSP round played out in very hot conditions at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimao, Portugal today.

Kawasaki Puccetti Racing rider Can Oncu was out on track yesterday for free practice, in which he prepared for the subsequent Superpole. He was able to put in a very strong qualifying performance, setting the sixth fastest time (1’44”365).

With this result, the young Turkish rider got away from the second row of the grid for the afternoon’s 17-lap race.

Can made a very fast start when the lights went out and was immediately up into the leading group. Over the subsequent laps he lost contact with the frontrunners but was nevertheless able to finish his race in eleventh position, just outside the top ten.

Oncu will be back out tomorrow for the second and final race making up this seventh WorldSSP round.

“I started strong and was able to keep pace with the race leaders for a few laps. Before the race we decided to try a few new solutions but unfortunately, they didn’t bring the desired results and so for tomorrow we’ll go back to the previous set-up. Eleventh isn’t the result we were looking for, but we’ll use the data collected today to improve in tomorrow’s race. Thanks to the team for their support.”
