Double fracture for a blameless Oncu following a race 2 incident.

The second race making up the third Supersport World Championship round played out today at the TT Circuit Assen in The Netherlands. Having led the way in free practice, Kawasaki Puccetti Racing rider Can Oncu qualified fifth in yesterday’s Superole. After fighting long and hard for the race 1 win, the Turk eventually had to settle for seventh place after he suffered a drop in front tyre performance.

This afternoon, in cool and sunny conditions, Can took part in the second and final race of this Dutch round, lining up on the second row of the grid once more.

Oncu’s race unfortunately did not last long as he was hit by another rider through the first corner, which caused him to crash into the runoff area. Transported immediately to the medical centre, the unlucky Kawasaki Puccetti Racing rider was then transferred to Groningen hospital where he was diagnosed with two fractures to the left forearm, specifically the distal ulna and proximal radius. Doctors are currently evaluating whether surgery is required to reduce the fractures.

It is unlikely Oncu will be able to take part in the next round of the Supersport World Championship, which will take place on 5-7 May at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya, in Spain.

“I started strong and was heading into the first corner but as soon as I began to lean into the turn, I was hit by another rider and crashed. It was a serious, high-speed crash and I immediately realised that I’d hurt myself. Now all I can do is follow the indications of the doctors in the hope I can be back on track as soon as possible.”
